Java on Crete

posted Friday, 6 April 2007
Next month I’ll be in Xanix located on the Greek island of Crete presenting my Java performance tuning course. Why Xania and why Crete? The initial motivation was Heinz. He now calls Crete home. But aside from that, I discovered after our first offerings last May was; Crete offers a wonderful mix of conditions that creates a wonderful environment in which to learn.

First and foremost is our dedication to providing the best training experience that we can deliver. Without a solid course we have nothing but a nice vacation which attendees may appreciate but I’m sure employers would be less than thrilled about. It should be of no surprise that the biggest resistance we’ve had so far, employers have difficulty believing that this won’t be more than just a vacation. All I can say is that those that have so far attended will say that the course is anything but a vacation. Some of the problems in the performance tuning course will have you scratching your head for a while. Heinz’s repertoire contains some mind twisting stuff also.

The beauty of Crete is that after a full day of course materials you can step out into a very relaxing environment. The hotel of choice for this May’s offering is the Monte Vardia located high above the little city of Chania (Xania). The surrounding area has a number of beaches that are very child friendly and May is a great time of the year in Crete. It is just before the high season so things are still inexpensive and relatively uncrowded.

There is also the opportunity to stay a bit longer and visit Crete. On our last offering in October we had one person bring along his bicycle. His plan was to cycle over the mountains to the south side of the island and after spending a bit of time there, cycle back to Chania. Unfortunately it snowed at altitude which made the return trip over the mountains on a bicycle cycling impossible to manage.

So I invite you to check out the course offerings that Heinz and I have put together. It ranges from performance tuning to patterns to Heinz’s brand new Java 6 course. And afterwards, you can enjoy the great Cretan cuisine as well as the beach and other attractions. Oh I forgot to mention, our aim is to be family friendly so spouses and children are encouraged to join.
