Methodologies

posted Monday, 14 June 2004
I'll freely admit to not being a RUP expert. That said, I have encountered it (and various incantations) since 93.and continue to encounter it. My only wish is that all the methodologist had not abandoned the playing field to Mr. Booch. As loud as the claims are to RUP as being agile, I've yet to have encountered the pleasure of experiencing this. Thought there is some truth to the proclamation that one use what they want and ignore the rest lays waste to the reality that ignoring the rest often leaves important pieces of information "homeless". By going on to other things (patterns etc.), we seem to have been left with the methodology of choice being "the last one standing". I don't believe in the single methdology fits all feeling. Having RUP be the methdology of choice amoung the check box tickers and bean counters has deprived the industry of some interesting alternatives. Certianly exterme programming is an interesting alternative but management views this process as being to chaotic to manage. This maybe true but sometimes, getting to the point as quickly as possible is what is really needed to be successful. This is something that RUP is reputed to be able to achieve but something that I've yet to see.
