The funny thing about the web is that it is difficult to verify the source and accuracy of comments made and left behind by people. Take posting in Joe’s blog
“If you think its bad that the writers do not get paid.... The owner threatened to fire any one of his staff who even asks for a raise!”
Wow, if there is any veracity to this comment, I just don’t know what to say.
JDJ is in the process of rebuilding their editorial staff. If you are going to JavaONE, expect to see a help wanted sign posted at the Sys-con booth. If you are interested, go ahead and approach them but before you do, consider this; if you are willing to give of your time freely to any cause, I suggest that you choose one where your efforts will be appreciated. Know that is you donate your time to JBoss for example, Marc and his crew will be much more appreciative of you efforts than the owners of JDJ have been with any of their editorial volunteers. Your time is valuable, use it wisely.
As another ex-editor of JDJ who managed to last a few years, I can only
agree. I now wish I'd invested my time a bit more wisely.
This is not to say I didn't approach the situation with my eyes open, since I did (at the time I felt it looked good on my CV). But it erks me that a publisher can continue to make money off the back of volunteer effort and yet be completely unappreciative of that effort.
