Sun Techdays Prague

posted Tuesday, 21 November 2006
On Wednesday afternoon, November 15th I managed to roll into Sun Techdays in Prague. By that time the event was well underway. Being in Prague it appear as though the NetBeans team took advantage of the situation to fill peoples brains with all kinds of ideas for using the application. After watching Geertjan Wielenga turn NetBeans into a music authoring (check out JFugue on java.net) and playback tool, I dare not call it simply and IDE anymore. The other NetBeans presentations showed off a number of features including Matisse. It was cool to watch Roman Strobl crank out different WS clients one right after another. It was pretty interesting watching him use Matisse to add menus and what nots to NetBeans while it was in use! The drag and drop from the DB to the screen (two different ways) was also a cool sight. The feature was working with Derby. I didn't press it but I wonder how many other DBs it works with.

On Thursday morning I spoke on performance anti-patterns. The room that I had was large so I was very surprised to find that I had 345 people in attendance! Just an unbelievable turnout. What was even more flattering is that the number of people that came up to me in other sessions and offered complements. All in all it was a pretty good crowd. A little quiet for my liking but they did answer the questions presented. Other talks I attended were in regards to the news and a wonderful talk on JMX. If only more people knew how easy it was to inject JMX into their applications.

The subject of my talk was performance anti-patterns. A sort of laundry list of things people do to ensure that they never find the source of their performance problems in their applications. To be fair, it's not an easy task to sort through things especially when all the issues are stacked on top of one another. And there is the other factor that tends to make things difficult, the boss drilling holes in your back. Kind of keeps you glued to the screen which is too bad because many performance problems can be solved by just talking through the issues.

The highlight had to be my visit to the Sun offices in Prague. I sat down with Tim, Geertjan, Roman and my MP3 recorder for about an hour. I'll be working up the recording for a posting on TSS.

So once again I am very indebted to the Sun evangelist team for letting me hang out with them while pretending to be one of them. It was a really fun and I hope that I will be allowed to participate once again.
